Hans Johnson and Herman Gmack founded Palmer Johnson Yachts in 1918. With its shipyard located in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, Palmer Johnson began by building and repairing rowing skiffs and commercial fishing vessels.
In 1926, Palmer Johnson built its first sailing yacht. In the decades following, Palmer Johnson has been a winner of major championship races in the golden era of sailing yachts.
Hans’ son built the shipyard’s first wooden yacht in 1928, which earned the company a reputation for small, high quality yachts, while simultaneously boosting sales for custom wooden yachts.
The company was officially named Palmer Johnson Yacht in 1956 when local businessmen purchased it. Shortly after, Pat Haggerty, founder of Texas Instruments, bought Palmer Johnson in 1961, and the company began to pioneer the use of aluminum.
Design, performance, and emotional appeal are the core values of Palmer Johnson. Throughout the last decade, the company has introduced a Superyacht and a SuperSport series as well as the use of modular production process, carbon fiber superyacht build techniques, and 3D engineering of yachts.
